Playing Safe With Preston

About the author

My Story

Author Bio

I am an Early Childhood Educator, Author, and Mother who experienced first-hand the hardships associated with a Traumatic Brain Injury. My oldest son Preston, suffered such an injury after a skateboard fall at 20 years old. My children's book is designed to promote safety awareness and to advocate for helmet use while following along with Preston as he shows all the activities in which it’s appropriate to wear a helmet.

My Mission

Community Events

The goal is to get my book in as many hands as possible. I attend local Safety Day Fairs, Bike Rodeos, Schools, Summer Camps and do other vendor events where I can encourage the use of helmets and other safety gear.  My message is a good reminder for kiddos and a call for parents to make sure their kids are wearing a helmet when riding on toys that make them go. Not just any helmet, but one that fits their head the right way. I also like to make sure that kiddos are wearing their helmet properly, which is pushed down to cover the forehead and strapped tight under the chin.

Helmets and other safety gear have the potential to save a life. Protect your kiddos and yourself!

Wear a helmet!

Educate

I educate and advocate for safety! My book talks about the brain and its functions on a level kiddos can understand. It discusses the 5 senses and how the brain receives and interprets them. It shares the importance of the brain in processing information and learning new things. My book includes open ended questions to engage the reader and has classroom resources in the back, including activity sheets on several topics touched on in the book.

Teaching children about what they are protecting when they wear a helmet and what the brain does for them helps them make a connection about a part of their body they don't see. Using my mascot Brainy while reading my book helps kiddos visualize what their brain may actually look like and makes it real.
